LEARNING OUTCOMES
Professionalism and Personal Development
Professionalism is the bedrock of every business. Besides displaying the technical and academic skills learned at school and acquired in previous jobs, professionalism is not complete without honesty, integrity, compassion, and effective communication. All management expects their employees to display a high level of professionalism in their jobs. Professionalism personal development. One can hide sloppiness, incompetence, and indifference at a workplace for a while, but poor performance will eventually catch up with that individual sooner than later. Lack of professionalism and no personal development on a job is a recipe for dismissal.
Using appropriate language, carrying oneself in a manner that presents a positive image, and dressing neatly and appropriately for the environment are all professional signs. Unruly and destructive behaviors that are offensive to employees and customers are not acceptable in any organization. Even if an employee is under pressure, it is expected to be calm and composed in handling the prevailing situation. Likewise, it is essential to be positive, communicate sincerely, and accept constructive feedback on every job.
As part of the exercise to maintain a high level of professionalism, most organizations have prohibited smoking cigars and pipes at the workplace. In some cases, they have created designated smoking areas that are mainly outside the company’s premises. Some companies even go the extra mile to hire only nonsmokers because they believe it is hard for some smokers to maintain professionalism with their chronic smoking habits.
Employees are expected to maintain professionalism during and after normal working when working representing the company. One’s attitude both outside of work and at work can positively or negatively affect the public perspective of the company. Some employers increasingly view employees’ blogs to search for content that might cause concerns or reflect poorly on the company.
Leadership and Workforce Diversity
For industries to maximize their profits and expedite their growth, they must seek a workforce that will help them to actualize their goal, which is the main reason why their recruiters are all over the place, hunting for employees with the skill sets that will promote their businesses. The employees that are hired are demographically diverse. According to the Journal of Business Logistics article by Rae Andre, the workforce is experiencing tremendous demographic changes. The reality is that after completing my studies at ULM, I will find myself leading female males and other people from diverse cultures one day. Dealing with gender stereotypes and effectively managing male employees are the hurdles I must overcome in my future job.
Studies have shown that most leaders are forced to adopt leadership styles to help their work to actualize their common goal. J Brand and Fred Luthans article, Virginia Schein stated that,
"successful middle managers are perceived to possess characteristics, attitudes, and temperaments that were more similar to men than to women in emotional stability, aggressiveness, leadership ability, self-reliance, certainty, vigor, desiring responsibility, seriousness, objectivity, knowledge, and straight-forwardness."
The concept of Virginia's statement makes some female leaders abandon their feminine natural talent and try to assume masculine characteristics, especially when leading male employees. Their notion is that they will get more respect and compliance by adopting masculine leadership attributes. However, choosing the wrong leadership style could have much impact on the employees. In addition, studies have shown that some employees take the emotional problem they have relating with their manager home, which could devastate their families.
As a female manager leading male employees, I will keep everyone focused on the unifying principle. I believe shifting workers' focus from individualism will help to overcome the barrier of gender differences. Using my developer theme, I will create a working environment that will make the employees under me nurture and grow their potentials. Besides, their success and achievement will be acknowledged and celebrated.
The Purpose of Effective Communication
.
Effective communication is a vital tool in the health profession when it comes to relating with patients. It is also resourceful and essential in teamwork and interpersonal relationship. The ability to effectively communicate information among staff members and with patients will determine the extent to which a business will do well. As a potential healthcare worker, the ability to send messages and information in a way that it would be understood as intended and produce the desired result will measure my technical competencies and interpersonal capabilities. It is essential for me always to consider how the targeted audience would receive the message being passed. When communicating with my peers, subordinates, and patients, I need to understand that choosing the right phrases and sentences is crucial. Both verbal and written communication requires critical thought and analysis. If I have the skill to communicate clearly and effectively, I will do well in my career.
Another means of non-verbal communication that is used heavily in the business community is email. Emails are used daily to research products and services, buy services, reach out to clients, and share valuable information with employees. Emails sent out by individuals acting in a certain capacity in a company reflect the individual and the whole company. Strong writing skills are essential but knowing what to divulge would save the company one works for from liability. Disseminating information in the Healthcare sector requires a lot of caution because most of the information we will be dealing with requires to be treated with confidentiality. It is essential to understand emails in most cases, could be transported via an unsecured channel. Although email is used to promote healthcare services and advise patients on their visits and appointments, it is always essential that it is not always a secure channel, and as a result, limited and insensitive information can only be shared on this channel.
Having a high standard of academic, professional behavior is expected in all professions. This requires acting with an appropriate demeanor, possessing proficiency and respect to perform the job. A professional healthcare professional is expected to put his/her patients' well-being above their self-interests because it is right. In the healthcare industry, patients seek for help to recover from their medical issues and they also look for a facility where they will be treated with dignity and respect. To support my clients and my peers, I am obligated to be professional and respectful.
An excellent interpersonal relationship entails working well with all kinds of people irrespective of their background, gender, religion, ethnicity, and sexual orientation. Having a good relationship with others at a place of work creates a positive and productive atmosphere. "Professional devote much energy to establishing a positive interpersonal relationship and treat one another in a respectful, caring manner. "(Sherry M. 2008)
